Where Do I Vote in Gloucester, MA?
Today, Tuesday Nov 3rd, is election day for municipal positions - mayor, city council, and school committee (as well as non-binding referendum questions). If you recently purchased a home in Gloucester and don't know where to vote, or what we're voting on, this handy guide will help you.
The first race on the ballot is for mayor. In Gloucester, the mayor's term lasts two years. The top two choices from an earlier preliminary election will face each other tomorrow.
Next, there is a race for at-large city councilors. They are also elected in two year terms, with voting on odd years. Since four are elected to serve, you can choose to vote for up to four. These councilors are elected to serve the city at large, and not a particular ward or area.
Ward councillors appear only on the ballot for your local ward, although they make decisions that can affect all of Gloucester. Each ward elects one councillor, which also serves a two year term with odd-year voting.
The Gloucester school committee is comprised of six members as well as the mayor. The committee is involved with school facilities planning and operations, district-wide testing policies, and much more. These members also serve for two years, like all other municipal elections.
If you're not entirely sure what ward you're in - don't worry, it can be confusing and some polling places have recently changed.
Ward 1 contains East Gloucester, as well as the Route 127 area to the Rockport town line.
Ward 2 is the downtown area that includes the Fort, Main Street, Washington and Prospect Streets, as well as the Maplewood Avenue area.
Ward 3 includes more of downtown, from parts of West Gloucester of Rt 133 to Centennial Ave, and then some of the neighborhood near Gloucester Ave, Washington, and Maplewood avenues, up to Addison Gilbert High School.
Ward 4 consists of much of the area of 127 north of Addison Gilbert Hospital, plus Cherry Street, up to Annisquam, Lanesville, to the Rockport border.
Finally, Ward 5 consists of Magnolia as well as most of West Gloucester.
